Which fabrics are the dyes most suitable for?

Natural dyes are most suitable for natural fibres. Textiles such as cotton, linen, silk, wool and hemp. The fibres of these materials bond well with the pigments in the natural dyes. Rich colours are more easily achieved on wool and silk, while linen and cotton offer softer shades.

Which fabrics can’t be dyed?

Polyester, acrylic and nylon can’t be coloured using natural dyes as they don’t absorb the pigments. Blended fabrics, such as a wool mixed with polyester is likely to have uneven colouring if a natural dye is applied. For best results, stick to all natural fabrics.

What are the drawbacks of natural dyes?

The outcome of natural dyes can be less predictable when compared to synthetic - they offer very different results.

The colours you achieve using natural dyes can also vary, we always recommend you buy enough natural dye for your entire project. This is so that the dye is from the same batch, making the finished results more reliable. If you buy from two different batches, the strength and shade of the dye may vary. This is to be expected with a natural product. Using flowers as an example, the shades of the petals will vary from plant to plant.

How do I care for naturally dyed materials?

Gently handwash naturally dyed fabrics in cold water, using a very mild, plant-detergent. Prolonged exposure to light can cause fading.

Depending on the dye you choose, you can achieve gentle botanical greens and golden yellows or deep indigos and earthy reds.
