Fustic plant dye is a vibrant, natural yellow dye celebrated for its bright golden tones and versatility in textile dyeing. Traditionally derived from the wood of the Chlorophora tinctoria tree (also known as old fustic), this dye has been used for centuries to create luminous yellows and rich greens when overdyed with indigo. Today, fustic remains a popular choice for natural dyers, artisans, and sustainable fashion brands seeking bold, plant-based colour.

Fustic Plant Dye

What is fustic plant dye?

Fustic dye is a natural colourant extracted from either the old or young fustic tree. Old fustic provides a strong colour, and is made from Maclura Tinctoria. Young fustic is made from the Smoke Tree, and produces less permanent shades.

It is often called dyers mulberry, and it is celebrated for its brightness and clarity, fustic produces sunny shades that are difficult to achieve with many other plant dyes. It works especially well on natural fibres such as cotton, linen, wool, and silk, delivering vibrant results.

What colours can you achieve with fustic dye?

Fustic is best known for its striking yellow tones, but its versatility extends beyond a single shade. Depending on your dye process and modifiers, you can achieve:

  • Bright lemon yellow
  • Warm golden hues
  • Mustard and deeper yellow tones
  • Fresh to olive greens when over-dyed.

Using different mordants can intensify brightness. Natural dyeing is an experimental process, with no two batches the same!

Is fustic dye colourfast?

Fustic offers moderate to good colourfastness, particularly when used with the correct mordant, this is also dependent on which fibre you’re applying the dye to. While it holds well under normal washing conditions, it can be more sensitive to prolonged exposure to strong sunlight compared to darker dyes.

To maintain its brightness, it’s best to wash dyed textiles gently and dry them away from direct sunlight.

Is fustic dye sustainable?

Fustic plant dye is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic dyes. It is derived from a plant source and typically requires fewer harsh chemicals in the dyeing process.

Why choose fustic for natural dyeing?

Fustic stands out for its ability to produce bright, cheerful yellows and its compatibility with other natural dyes. It can be used alone or in combination with other dyes and mordants.

For dyers looking to expand their palette with a reliable, plant-based yellow, fustic is an essential addition. Its vibrant colour, ease of use, and natural origins make it a valuable dye for artisans.

Natural dye safety guidelines

  • Wear protective gear - gloves, an apron or old clothing, a dusk mask when handling powders.
  • Dedicated equipment - keep tools separate from your kitchen items. Use stainless steel or enamel to prevent reactions or colour modification.
  • Ensure the space you’re working is well ventilated.
  • Handle mordants and plant dyes with care.
  • Dye baths involve hot water, be mindful of burns or spills.
  • Dispose of materials responsibly.

We cannot guarantee exact colour results with our natural dye products. Each batch is naturally unique, contributing to the distinctive, handcrafted character of your finished pieces. For best results, we encourage experimentation, as colour outcomes can vary depending on fibre type, mordant used, and water quality.
